Quantifying the contribution of arm postural tremor to the outcome of goal-directed pointing task by displacement measures.

A method for quantifying the outcome of goal-directed postural pointing was presented and used for relating the tremor output to the oscillations of single arm landmarks. The displacement of reflective markers placed on shoulder, upper arm, forearm, and hand were measured by an optoelectronic motion capture system in nine subjects holding a laser penlight pointed at a target. The high signal-to-noise ratio of the measured displacement series (from 7:1 for shoulder marker to 30:1 for hand marker) demonstrated the feasibility of the proposed system to carry out tremor analysis. (H, ρ)-induced dynamics and the quantum game of life

Abstract We propose an extended version of quantum dynamics for a certain system S , whose evolution is ruled by a Hamiltonian H, its initial conditions, and a suitable set ρ of rules, acting repeatedly on S . The resulting dynamics is not necessarily periodic or quasi-periodic, as one could imagine for conservative systems with a finite number of degrees of freedom. In fact, it may have quite different behaviors depending on the explicit forms of H, ρ as well as on the initial conditions. After a general discussion on this (H, ρ)-induced dynamics, we apply our general ideas to extend the classical game of life, and we analyze several aspects of this extension.
Stochastic models for wind speed forecasting

Abstract This paper is concerned with the problem of developing a general class of stochastic models for hourly average wind speed time series. The proposed approach has been applied to the time series recorded during 4 years in two sites of Sicily, a region of Italy, and it has attained valuable results in terms both of modelling and forecasting. Moreover, the 24 h predictions obtained employing only 1-month time series are quite similar to those provided by a feed-forward artificial neural network trained on 2 years data.

The measurement of voltage characteristics in power systems requires the accurate estimation of the power supply frequency and signal synchronization, even in the presence of disturbances. The authors developed and tested two innovative techniques for instrument synchronization. The first is based on signal spectral analysis techniques performed by means of the Chirp-Z transform analysis. The second is a phase-locked loop (PLL) software based on a time-domain coordinate transformation and an innovative phase-detection technique. Annihilating sets for the short time Fourier transform

Abstract We obtain a class of subsets of R 2 d such that the support of the short time Fourier transform (STFT) of a signal f ∈ L 2 ( R d ) with respect to a window g ∈ L 2 ( R d ) cannot belong to this class unless f or g is identically zero. Moreover we prove that the L 2 -norm of the STFT is essentially concentrated in the complement of such a set. A generalization to other Hilbert spaces of functions or distributions is also provided. To this aim we obtain some results on compactness of localization operators acting on weighted modulation Hilbert spaces.

Recent developments on intense laser sources is opening a new field of optical sciences. An intense coherent light beam strongly interacting with the matter causes a coherent motion of a particle, forming a strongly dressed excited particle. A photon emission from this dressed excited particle is a strong nonlinear process causing high-harmonic generation (HHG), where the perturbation analysis is broken down. In this work, we study a coherent photon emission from a strongly dressed excited atom in terms of complex spectral analysis in the extended Floquet-Hilbert-space. Spectral Analysis of LMC-X2 with XMM/Newton

We present the results of the analisys of an archival observation of LMC X-2 performed with XMM/Newton. The spectra of this source has never been analyzed with a high precision instrument before. The spectrum of the source can be fitted with a blackbody with a temperature 1.5 keV plus a disk blackbody at 0.8 keV. We argue that the emission of this source can be straightforwardly interpreted as a sum of the emission from a boundary layer between the NS and the disc and a blackbody component coming from the disc itself. The detection of the O VIII emission line (and the lack of detection of lines in the iron region) can be due to the fact that the source lies in the Large Magellanic Cloud.

The baroreflex (BR) is an important physiological regulatory mechanism which reacts to blood pressure perturbations with reflex changes of target variables such as the heart period (electrocardiogram derived RR interval) or the peripheral vascular resistance (PVR).
